Schloss Leopoldskron

Schloss Leopoldskron was built in 1736 as a family property for the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Leopold of Fermian.

After a turbulent few hundred years in 1918, Max Reinhardt bought the Castle which was in a very dilapidated state, Max Reinhardt at the time was one of the most famous theater impresarios and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival.

Max Reinhardt with his newly renovated castle entertained many an audience and friends with theatre productions performed in many rooms in the castle.  He even built a garden theatre with the pond and the magnificent Untersberg mountain as a backdrop.

The second world war ended Reinhardt’s reign, as the “National Socialist government” confiscated it as “Jewish property”.  The castle is now owned privately by “Salzburg Global Seminar”.

Famous now for the backdrop of the “the sound of music” film, this location is perfect with backdrops of the lake, mountain, and the Salzburg Castle.

If the weather is kind, the ceremony takes place on the romantic terrace that was featured in the scene where Maria and the Von Trapp children fall off the boat into the lake.   The ceremony takes place between the two stone iconic seahorses with the famous gates overlooking the breathtaking mountain of Untersberg.  As the weather back up, the historic Max Reinhardt library is a fantastic alternative.
